Start of chat:

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [1] I have a question about about hosting customers (with different domains)...I'm able to host the sites by using a host header web app however I am not able to find a valid procedure for enabling incoming email. They reason being that it only allows one domain which is specified in the central admin. Especially with Exchange 2010's lack of public folder it is crucial to have incoming email working for multiple domains. Is there a way to do it?

A: Each Farm can be configured with only one incoming email domain. Perhaps you can make that incoming email domain generic and when email using the other domains is received destined for SharePoint you use a custom script to put a copy of the message into SharePoint's incoming email drop folder.

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [2] hi everybody, ok first, question about templates...I used SharePoint 2007 before with the help desk template...i would like to create a new one for 2010..but actually i don't have the option to select that template. did Microsoft remove that one in 2010?

A: The Help Desk template was part of the Fabulous 40 (FAB40). So, someone must have installed it manually in your 2007 environment. I haven't heard if the FAB40 have been tested in SharePoint 2010, but you would need to add that custom Site Template to see the Help Desk site on the create page of your new environment. In other words, there isn't a Help Desk site in SharePoint 2007 or SharePoint 2010. Does that answer the question?

A: Here is a link to the original Help Desk Site Template: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=CE90D6D7-7B96-47BF-A22F-A7E8C5D40647&displaylang=en

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [3] i have developed a treeview webpart which pulls documents from the document library depending on the sub site we selected. it works pefectly fine on test server. when i move it to production server. it works fine for 4 subsites out of 7. for three subsites it throws error
Server Error in '/' Application.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Source Error: An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below. Stack Trace: [NullReferenceException]

A: There isn't enough context here to determine why you are getting a NullReferenceException. You will need to include some exception handling and logging to see which specific line of code is throwing the exception. Once you know that it will probably be obvious what the differences are between the libraries.

A: One potential thing to check is whether the libraries that fail have spaces in the URL or not. Spaces can sometimes cause problems like a NullReferenceException.

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [4] Hello I need to Get Virtual Machine for my operation system Window Vista home premium 32 bit Service pack 2 and do not know how to get it from Microsoft. What will i do?

A: You can download Virtual PC 2007 from the Microsoft Download Center: <http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?FamilyID=04d26402-3199-48a3-afa2-2dc0b40a73b6&displaylang=en>;

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [5] Hi All, I have requirement that with having a single URL, whether it is possible to have both windows authentication and FBA in MOSS 2007?

A: This is possible in SharePoint 2010 but not in 2007. These are mutually exclusive in 2007 and each requires its own Web Application (An FBA Zone typically extending the Windows Auth Default Zone).

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [6] Hello. I'm trying to get into the FAST Search engine and so far it's been pretty straight-forward, but I can't figure out the usage of keywords. Do they work like a thesaurus? Is it possible to define <replacement> tags? If so, where would the thesaurus file be kept?

A: Keywords in FAST work very similar to how they work with SharePoint search. If a user types in a specific term you can use that to do various things such as best bets or visual best bet. So if a user types in "ERP" you can define things specifically to happen against that keyword. Another big thing FAST brings to the table is the ability to define user contexts which can be used in conjunction with keywords. So if a user were to type in the search term "ERP" you could show specific things to only project managers. Your original question was around thesaurus though. There's additional information about FAST on TechNet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee781286.aspx

Gary Lapointe MVP (Expert):

Q: [7] How can I limit what domain shows up when I'm adding new users? When I do it now it shows everyone in my domain which contains thousands of users in different domains.

A: You can use STSADM to set filters on what shows up in the people picker (same way we did in 2007). Run "STSADM -help setproperty" from the command line and you'll see several peoplepicker properties. You can also use PowerShell to get an SPWebApplication object (Get-SPWebApplication) and use the PeoplePickerSettings property.

Becky Bertram MVP (Expert):

Q: [8] My question is about Content Deployment in SharePoint 2010. In 2007, when you create a Job, you have the option to specify deployment options that will set the job as incremental or full. In SharePoint 2010, however, the Create Job page does not have a deployment options section (See the image on Becky's site: http://www.beckybertram.com/blogimages/ContentDeployment/CreateCDJob.gif ). How can I configure my job to be incremental or full in SharePoint 2010?

A: You can't do it through Central Administration, but you can specify whether you want to do a full or incremental deployment using PowerShell. Go to your SharePoint PowerShell prompt and type get-help new-spcontentdeploymentjob -detailed and then take a look at the IncrementalEnabled parameter.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [9] Can the ratings controls be created via ECMA (Java) script like the media web part - or did I dream that?

A: You likely can, not sure how, but the ClientOM'

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [11] can i ask a question on windows application?

A: Unfortunately, that’s out of the scope of today’s chat.

Chandima (Expert):

Q: [13] How to move a medium (1WFE + 1 SQL) MOSS 2007 x32 bit to 2010 quickest way?

A: You have to first go to 64bit, unfortunately there is no Quick way.

Chandima (Expert):

A: @HN > I have a series of posts on my blog on how to do this.

Chandima (Expert):

A: @HN on moving the move a medium (1WFE + 1 SQL) MOSS 2007 x32 bit to 2010 quickest way? There is info on TechNet > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd622865(office.12).aspx

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [15] Has the maximum URL length changed in SP2010?

A: No. The limitation is a browser limit not SharePoint.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [16] How can multiple users work in a SharePoint project? For example - a webpart. In case of Winforms or WebApp we can keep the code sync using VSS or another software. Each and every developer can run the application of their own. But in case of SP consider a developer is debugging and another developers does an IISRESET. It breaks. So what are the ways where multiple users can work in a sing product/project?

A: Consider using the ASP.NET isolated development model where everyone has their own SharePoint environment and all code is kept in sync with source control (VSS/TFS/Subversion/etc). What you describe sounds like everyone is working against the same server which presents all kinds of challenges, just like in WinForm / WebForm development. With everyone working isolated, you won't run into the issue you describe. Then you have a central build server where you do your integration.

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [18] We are currently running Search Server Express 2008 and I am thinking of upgrading to Search Server Community Edition (Express) 2010 Does it provide all of the functionality of SharePoint Community Edition 2010 (WSS 2010)?

A: Can you please clarify your question? I'm assuming you're referring to Express Edition when you say "Community Edition"

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

A: Technically the sky is the limit. How big should it go? Depends if it is a mostly read site collection or a read/write site collection. The generic answer is it shouldn't be more than about a 100 gb. If it is going to be that large make sure it is in a content database all by itself. Even at 100 GB if it is read/write you may run into locking issues. How big do you need it to be?

Todd Klindt (Expert):

Q: [19] On behalf of @Shay - I have a question: I just installed SQL Server 2008 and SharePoint 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2. I am getting an error message while attempting to run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard tool: SQL Server SERVER_NAME has an unsupported version 10.0.2531.0. Please refer to "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=165761";; For more information on the minimum requirement SQL Server versions and how to download them". So, I went there and found a link to "Cumulative update package 2 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1" I installed it on the server, rebooted but still getting the same error.

A: Does your SQL instance show 10.0.2531.0 or later in SQL Management Studio? Are SharePoint and SQL on the same server?

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [20] Can we perform Joins in CAML Query? If not what is the use of SPQuery.Joins()? How can we simulate joins using it?

A: Yes... to view the syntax, create a simple Console app and create a join using LINQ for SharePoint. Then set the data context's .Log property to Console.Out and examine the output when you run it.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [21] Where will i find information about SharePoint licensing?

A: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com ... follow links on "how to buy" or contact your local MSFT rep.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

A: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/Pages/Licensing-Details.aspx

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [22] We have a CSM for loadbalancing our SharePoint 2007 environment. When we point the Mysites web application to the CSM, we receive the 404 error, but all other web applications work when pointed to the CSM. Is there any reason or setting for mysites that would prevent this from working?

A: No. Maybe you have the alternate access mappings setup incorrectly for the mysite web application?

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [23] Utilizing BCS to connect to SQL, does port 1433 need to be opened on the SharePoint Foundation web servers?

A: No, it only needs to be open on your SQL Server.

Claudio Brotto MVP (Expert):

Q: [24] In SharePoint 2010 does the Content Editor Webpart provide Cross Site Collection queries?

A: I guess you are talking about Content Query Web Part...

Darrin Bishop MVP (Expert):

A: This question should have been answered already.

Claudio Brotto MVP (Expert):

A: And... no, Content Query Web Parts do not support cross-site collection queries.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [25] how large a site collection can go in term of # of GB?

A: Technically the sky is the limit. How big should it go? Depends if it is a mostly read site collection or a read/write site collection. The generic answer is it shouldn't be more than about a 100 gb. If it is going to be that large make sure it is in a content database all by itself. Even at 100 GB if it is read/write you may run into locking issues. How big do you need it to be?

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [26] i have developed a treeview webpart which pulls documents from the document library depending on the sub site we selected.it works perfectly fine on test server. when i move it to production server. it works fine for 4 subsites out of 7. for three subsites it throws error
Server Error in '/' Application.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Source Error: An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below. Stack Trace: [NullReferenceExce

A: Unfortunately impossible to debug this way. Strongly recommend you (1) set your web.config to turn off custom errors and (2) step through your code because you're definitely trying to reference something that doesn't exist.

Darrin Bishop MVP (Expert):

Q: [27][Q24 follow up] That's correct ... In SharePoint 2010 does the Content Query Webpart provide Cross Site Collection queries?

A: No CQWP does not cross site collections. Still only sites in a single site collection.

Claudio Brotto MVP (Expert):

A: If you need cross site rollup, you could rely upon the query engine

Zlatan (Expert):

Q: [28] We have a large # of site collections on our 2007 farm and would like to upgrade to 2010. Due to the # of site collections and possible customizations an in place-upgrade may be to risky. How can we schedule migrations/upgrades from one farm to another while keeping the same vanity url for both farms.

A: Well once you deploy the SharePoint 2010 farm you can, start slowly upgrading a web application by web application attach db style, switch the original content DB in 2007 to read only and update the vanity url DNS setting to the new IP of the 2010 farm

Todd Klindt (Expert):

Q: [29] Todd, thanks. Yes it shows 10.0.2531.0. Yes SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and SQL 2008 are on the same server.

A: Are you sure you the version of SQL installed is 64 bit? Which SQL SKU (Enterprise, standard, etc) is it.

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [30] Does Search Server Express (Community Edition) 2010 Provide the same functionality (Workflow hosting, etc) as WSS 2010 (SharePoint Community Edition 2010)??

A: Search Server Express 2010 doesn't provide any workflow hosting capabilities - only Search. It pretty much gives you the same Search functionality found in SharePoint Server 2010, but with the limitation of running it on only a single server.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [31] In SharePoint 2010, what is the recommended way to manage a large number of vanity URLs (several hundred). Most of the vanity URL support in 2007 was specific to shortening URLs rather than maintaining a list of them. Also, would the solution be SEO friendly?

A: SharePoint (1) doesn't provide this capability or (2) support URL rewriting. I suggest you look at a firewall based solution (ISA Server).

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [32] We are looking for a way to host header site collection in WSS 3.0 AD Account Creation mode to SharePoint Foundation Default mode one at a time. What is the best way to approach this and is it possible?

A: I'm not sure I completely understand your question. Can you please clarify?

Randy Drisgill MVP (Expert):

Q: [33] How we can write JavaScript in a new Content Editor Webpart?

A: In 2010 when you add a Content Editor Web Part, it uses much the same Rich Text Editor as standard HTML field controls. You can click the Ribbon > Format Text > HTML > Edit HTML Source. The CEWP doesn't filter as much as a standard HTML field control. But it does seem to make some changes to the code when click OK. From what I have seen my basic JavaScript seems to work ok.

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [34] hello i have installed SharePoint 2010 in my server and i am seeing this error message in my event log: "Failure trying to synch web application 018b23f6-6b51-4ba6-ac12-3724014d7334, ContentDB af9f5c22-803b-4419-ade5-f716fd6ef75e Exception message was Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileApplicationNotAvailableException: No User Profile Application available to service the request. Contact your farm administrator."
Anyone help me how to resolve it?

A: Do you have the User Profile Service Application created on your farm?

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [35] Is there any relationship between Document ID Service and Search Service, when i activate the document id service, it throws unexpected exception and using correlation id i checked the log, it pointed out an error in Search Service.svc file?

A: You need to have the Search Service Application created and consumed by your Web Application to be able to search through Document IDs

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [36] Andrew-- it worked previously all i did was adding a caml query and which works fine on test server?

A: But you're running against different environments and obviously something is definitely different.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [37] Another one . We are developing products on MOSS2007. What are the ways to make sure that it is compatible with SP 2010. What are the areas i need to be careful to make it compatible with both the versions. Is there any tool which can go through the code and gives us the compatibility results?

A: Virtually anything you write in SharePoint 2007 should continue to work for SharePoint 2010. There's nothing that checks to make sure stuff works in both though.

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [38] SPD based workflow: how to use "save as template" and "save as wsp"?

A: If you wanted to create a workflow that could be reused in multiple places the best option would be to use the Reusable Workflow type in SPD 2010. Was that what you were referring to?

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [39] We are a small company around 200 people. How much will be the SharePoint license for us?

A: It depends on your infrastructure. It depends on the number of servers and desktop computers you have. If you are a small company, MS open license program will be good for you. SP Server 2010 Single OPEN license will cost $4926.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [40] Can the ratings controls be created via ECMA (Java) script (or some other Client OM method?) like the media web part - or did I dream that?

A: Not sure how, but I'm sure you could considering the ClientOM's have full access to the Web Parts on a page.

Becky Bertram MVP (Expert):

Q: [41] I'm trying to use SiteAdministrationSelector in my application page. It seems to have the dialog url hard coded for /_admin/ virtual path. Can I change this? Can I reinstrument this control?

A: I don't know what control template the SiteAdministrationSelector is using but it looks like it might be the AccountPickerAndLink.ascx user control, stored in the 14/TEMPLATE/CONTROLTEMPLATES folder. You could try copying and pasting that ascx control and modifying the path in the user control to not go to the _admin location, then using that new user control instead.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [42] what is best way to "host" a large ASP.net site within SharePoint so SP is only providing security framework?

A: This is a HUGE question... impossible to answer in a chat. You could create as site pages or application pages... but it really depends.

Zlatan (Expert):

Q: [43] I'm running medium/larger MOSS farm. I've installed the CU from April, but I still receive an error when running stsadm preupgradecheck. The error is, "An error occurred while parsing Entity Name. Line 14, position 28. This occurs after SPSearchInfo... Information Only is displayed. How do I get preupgradecheck to run successfully and generate reports? This occurs on my test and production environments.

A: Can you roll back to February CU? Before you do anything report the issue to MS support and if you can log a premier call that would be even better

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [44] What are sandbox solutions? Our SharePoint architect mentioned this last week.

A: Sandboxed solutions is a new feature. It enables site collection admins to manage applications in site collection. It provides developers a way to create solutions that can be deployed safely. Sandboxed solution will run with partial trust when deployed at the site collection level.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [45] thanks Andrew , but when i off the customError it does not show the error?

A: You need to step through your code and add error checking... Sorry

Zlatan (Expert):

Q: [46] Is there any difference in Records management functionality between SharePoint 2010 Standard and Enterprise?

A: none whatsoever

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [47] I'm completely new to SharePoint and have been tasked to set it up for use as an intranet for ~4000 users. I want to begin with SharePoint 2010 and want to know the best way to learn about it and all the possible uses before I lay out my scope - what is the best way to start learning about SharePoint?

A: This is a very good resource on where to get started: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ee410529.aspx

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [48] Can you point me to a nice case study or a document which shows how a "real world 10K+ users enterprise" moves their MOSS 2007 infrastructure to SS2010

A: There is lots of information out there today but nobody has done a case study that I have seen. You might look out on the web I did a 4 hour upgrade training black that is available free - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ff420396.aspx

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [49] Where can I learn more about sandbox solutions?

A: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee335711.aspx

Darrin Bishop MVP (Expert):

Q: [50] At a high level..how would you go about and build a custom cross-site lookup?

A: Search is a possibility. You can use the full text or keyword queries using the object model to query across multiple site collections. The SDK discusses search options. Take a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee557319(v=office.14).aspx

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [51] This may be pretty simple. I have a MOSS site that we want to add an "Instructions" section to. Instructions will be several paragraphs long so we want the web part to be collapsed so that users only see the title and then can click the link to view the entire instructions on the page. I was going to use CEWP to do this, but adding a Title link takes users to another page. I want to stay on the same page. Other ideas?

A: Are you referring to the title link of the web part? That can be controlled in the Web Part settings. You should just be able to remove the link or hide the title of the Web Part. Please let me know if I misunderstood the question.

A: Search Amazon for SharePoint 2010. It will give you names of most of the upcoming SharePoint 2010 books. You can also visit the following link to get a complete list of SharePoint 2010 books: http://wssv3faq.mindsharp.com/Lists/SharePoint%202010%20Books/V%20Books.aspx

Q: [54] For solutions deployed in SP2010 - Will deployment cause IIS reset/site reset like in 2007?

A: Just like in 2007, it depends. Solutions deployed that make changes to the web.config (safe control entries) recycle the app pool (not IIS). You can also set your solutiont o recycle IIS when deployed. Same is true in 2010. However with sandbox solutions, app pool & IIS resets don't happen.

Q: [55] Does SharePoint Server Community Edition 2010 Provide the same functionality as Search Server Express 2010 or do i need to install both to get the functionality of both? or is there some install package where you install Search Server Express Edition on top of SharePoint Server Express Edition (WSS) 2010 ??

A: John- there's no SharePoint Server "Community Edition". I believe you're referring to SharePoint Foundation 2010 (SPF 2010). If you're seeking the same Search functionality found in SharePoint Server 2010 (SPS 2010) on a SPF 2010 farm, install Search Server Express 2010.

Q: [60] In SharePoint 2010, when creating a content deployment job, the deployment options section allowing you to configure a job as incremental is missing. How do we configure an incremental deployment now?

A: See previous answer: You can't do it through Central Administration, but you can specify whether you want to do a full or incremental deployment using PowerShell. Go to your SharePoint PowerShell prompt and type get-help new-spcontentdeploymentjob -detailed and then take a look at the IncrementalEnabled parameter.

Q: [62] Can custom Themes be upgraded from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010?

A: Themes in 2010 are completely different than they are in 2007. You can use the old theming method if you have Visual Upgrade set to use the 2007 visuals, but once you move forward to 2010 visuals the new theming engine takes over. The new theming engine uses THMX files that can be created from the Office the client software (Word and Powerpoint 2007 and 2010). The tricky part about bringing old 2007 themes forward to 2010 is that the theme CSS refers specifically to SharePoint 2007 HTML classes and ID's which are completely changed in 2010. Your best bet is to create a new custom master page in 2010 and try to reuse or leverage your old CSS in the master page.

A: With more than 2000 items, the performance would deteriorate but it also depends on the size of the item. For example, the recommended size for a document is 50 MB. If the size goes beyond this limit, the performance would suffer.

Q: [68] Thanks for your answer John Ross. I need additional clarification on one thing though: Assuming I have a keyword "Gears" which has a two-way synonym "GearSyn" and a one-way synonym "Gear". Are the following assumptions correct? 1- Searching for "Gears" returns results for "Gears", "GearSyn" and "Gear"; 2 - Searching for "GearSyn" returns results for "Gears" and "Gear"; 3 - Searching for "Gear" only returns results for "Gear" and not "Gears" nor "GearSyn"; 4 - Results rankings are not affected by using synonyms

A: Essentially that is correct. Two way synonyms return results for both parts of the synonym. In your example a one-way synonym on "Gear" would return results on whatever the synonym was assoicated with -- but a search on the synonym wouldn't return "Gears"
As far as I'm aware these do not impact rankings. However, you could always promote or demote results in FAST if they keyword was important. In fact you could promote/demote just for a keyword when returned for a specific user context.

Q: [70] One of my clients is using a 3rd party to host their MOSS environment. They are currently only running SQL backups of the Content DBs. any suggestions on best practices for backup/restore, disaster recovery? Also if they want to move a subsite to a new site collection, can they do this?

A: If they are backing up their content databases then they will always been able to recover their content to that point in time. Depending on their needs, that might be okay. The first step is for them to decide what they want to restore, then we can decide how best to back it up. Moving a subsite to a new site collection is tricky. It would be similar to the Silverlight PowerPoint viewer that allows you to navigate through the slide deck.

A: yeah if you create a for example silverlight globe control and use the FASTs federated Object model to interpret the data that comes back on the result page, it's pretty common, you can also use chart web parts and similar custom web parts to interpret the data in the same way, look at FAST federated OM, most are same calls like for 2010 Enterprise Search

A: There isn't a hard limit. As site collections get larger, both in 2007 and 2010, the likelihood of a failure increases. In 2007 that started happening around 10 GB. Personally, I've done site collections as large as 20 GB in 2010 without problem. My best advice, test, test, test.

A: Sure. In the FeatureDeactivating of the Feature Event Receiver you must remove the old file using something like the following to delete the existing Welcome page:

SPFile file = web.GetFile("[url]");
if (file.Exists)
{
  file.Delete();
}

Then you use a Module to put your new Welcome page out. Alternatively, you just put out a Welcome page with a different name and set the Welcome page to your page using web.RootFolder.WelcomePage

A: Did that answer the question?

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [105] When I deploy my web enabled InfoPath 2007 form through a feature, the form opens in the client application instead of opening in browser. Why?

But those documents haven't showed in the created document set. Is there anything I missed out in the settings page? Also, how to download the document set contents as a single zip file?

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [110] Follow up on Q[99] SSRS authentication. Shane you said the authentication is configurable, is that on the SharePoint site or in the Admin console for SharePoint or on the SQL side? Thanks for the opportunity to ask.

Q: [115] Zlatan: Thank you for your answer Q28. Let me provide some additional information on the setup of my environment. 2000+ Site collections all in a single Web application with a single vanity url sites.acme.com. Example sites.acme.com/sites/foo, sites.acme.com/sites/bar etc. If I wanted to upgrade sites.acme.com/sites/foo to the 2010 Farm in June and sites.acme.com/sites/bar in July how can this be accomplished without changing the vanity url sites.acme.com.

A: what I meant was to maintain the 2007 site with a vanity url in "read only" mode until the migration of the web application to the 2010 farm is complete, once the migration to 2010 is complete switch the vanity url DNS setting to the 2010 web app IP, the question is whether you you can stay in read only mode until the migration of a particular web app to 2010 is done

The stsadm to powershell mapping grid (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff621084.aspx) suggests not. The reason I'm asking is because I had some trouble with stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials returning the following error: "Value cannot be null. Property name: -farm". -farm was not a valid property when I tried to set it and is not even mentioned in the usage documentation. I had to update the credentials manually across all affected services.

Q: [118] I have created an InfoPath 2007 application. I am trying to submit the form programmatically but I get "Cannot cast dataconnections[] ...." error. I am sure there is nothing wrong with the code. I copied it from a Microsoft article. Please help!

A: It depends on the form's destination. You can submit to the following locations:
1. Web service
2. Forms library
3. As an email message
4. To the hosting environment
If your destination is forms library and you are submitting programmatically to the hosting environment or vice versa, you will get casting error. You should explicitly cast the object. For example, if you are submitting to a library, use following code:
FileSubmitConnection connection = (FileSubmitConnection) (DataConnections[“Submit”]);
If you have workflow in your form and are submitting to a hosting environment, then cast your object as following:
SubmitToHostConnection connection = (SubmitToHostConnection) (DataConnections[“Submit”]);
Hope this helps!

Q: [119] I have a ASP.NET 3.5 web site with lots of AJAX/JQuery stuff in it and want to port to SS2010 as a site collection. What is the best way to do that?

A: There is no real answer to this other than it depends. If you wrote to the web site using controls it might not be hard to bring in the code as that is somewhat more self contained. Without seeing the site and knowing how it is built cant really even guess. While SP uses ASP.Net you do work with-in a framework.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [120] Question related to .NET Framework usage (may sound silly).... I see that my Windows 2008 R2 x64 has both 32 & 64 bit .NET 3.5 framework. SharePoint 2010 makes use of which one? Also if we migrate a MOSS 2007(32bit) to SPS2010, does it makes use of 32-bit framework or 64-bit framework?

A: SharePoint only leverages x64... anything you write for SharePoint 2010 will work against x64 (code can't run in sharepoint that's not x32).

Q: [121] @Todd - Can we really delete a page which is set as the welcome page currently? Wont that throw an exception?

A: I would orphan it rather than delete it but SharePoint doesn't include any kind of

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

A: Arg, SharePoint doesn't provide any kind of check preventing file.Delete() of a referenced page.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [122] Follow up Q[106] Thanks for your response AC. But I have created the doc set first and i went to doc set content type settings page and configured the doc set content type to have only "Document" content type and there is an option in the settings page itself to upload the documents. those documents are not shown in the doc set.

A: That's odd... once you create the doc set and upload to the doc set, they should go into the doc lib. Never seen what you're explaining unfortunately. Sorry...

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [123] @Shane Young - bit worried about the user profile migration effort. We have a workaround for the STS_Site and STS_Web contentclass's so that's the lesser of two evils. I can roll the farm back to IU and it works, forward to SP2 and it breaks [in DEV, UAT or PROD]. So frustrating! And an upgrade to 2010 fixes it again...I mean seriously!

A: Create a new SSP and just try the crawl to see if it works as a test. If it does you can look at other options, if it it doesn't then you know it is your farm or content db.
Have you tried a new farm crawling that db?

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [124] I created a SDP 2010 Reusable Workflow and attached it to a Content Type. Later I associated the Content Type to couple of Doc Libraries in the same Site Collection and one in a separate Site Collection. The workflow was successfully attached to the Doc Libs in the same Site Collection whereas it didn't get associated with the Doc Lib in the separate Site Collection. Is this possible in first place? secondly, if I modify the Reusable Workflow then would the change trickle down to all Doc Libs to whom the associated Content Type is attached? Whether this can happen across Site Collections?

A: The reusable workflow won't work outside the scope of the site collection you are in. If you wanted this to work cross site collection you'd pretty much have to make sure the same content types existed in all the site collections as well as the workflows were also in each site collection.

Becky Bertram MVP (Expert):

Q: [125] Is there an easy way to export / download the contents of a discussion board - including content, posts and replies (i.e. into excel format?). The default "Export To Spreadsheet" button only gives wrapper information and not content.

A: In SharePoint 2010, go to the Discussion list and say you want to create a new view and select "Access View". This will give you the option of creating several kinds of reports in Access that will include a post and the replies to it. Keep in mind that it's a connection to the actual data in SharePoint. From there you can use the Access tools to export the data to Excel or whatever format you need.

Zlatan (Expert):

Q: [126] a follow up on Q [76]: all SHAREPOINT OOB web services are not accessible by anonymous users from a third party application even if all SharePoint site is set as anonymous , this happens to both moss and sp 2010, what cause it? I was suggested writing a custom web service, but what should i do different?

A: perhaps impersonate a safe user account?!

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [127] Re: question 51 reply from John Ross. I want the title to display a link. When the user clicks the link, the paragraphs in the CEWP are displayed. I tried to collapse the web part to just show the title and that does collapse the instructions, but I need the link to be "un-collapse" the web part so users can see what's in the content area.

A: If you wanted to do something like you suggested where you were collapsing and expanding information you'd most likely need to do something custom similar to how you'd do it with a traditional HTML page. You could hide the title of the web part and then show the title as part of your code. There's probably some other methods to tackle this but that would probably be the easiest.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [128] where will i find cross domain setting on the server?

A: Cross domain setting? Please elaborate! Are you talking SharePoint? Which version?

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [129] I have a ASP.NET 3.5 web site with lots of AJAX/JQuery stuff in it and want to port to SS2010 as a site collection. What is the best way to do that?

A: The great thing in SharePoint 2010 is that ASP.NET AJAX is baked into every page. So, you simply remove any setup you did in 2007 to ensure that AJAX was available and you should be able to move your code over with little issue. As to jQuery, sadly SharePoint 2010 does not include a copy with its install. So, whatever approach you used to make jQuery available in 2007 should work in 2010. However, the entire DOM and most CSS classes that 2007 exposed have changed in 2010. So, many of the jQuery solutions you had in 2007 will need to be tweaked for 2010. Not sure if there is a site that specifically addresses this, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [131] Is that In Place Records Management efficient and secured compare to a separate record center site?

A: Yes... it is secure.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [132] i create a content type and publish it via MMS , in the subscriber site collection i can re-use this content type, but the workflow associated with this content type not available in the subscriber site collection, only in the original site collection, any workaround?

A: You need to make sure you've deployed the workflow to the target site collection. If you haven't, do that and republish the CT... it will auto-fixup.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [133] Sorry I was asking about InfoPath 2010. Thanks! I am using data connections but i don't know how to enable them to access lists on another site collection.

A: Central admin > general application settings > Configure InfoPath forms services (under InfoPath forms services). In the "cross-domain access for user form templates" section, select the "Allow cross-domain data access for user form templates that use connection settings in a data connection file" check box. This will allow user form template to access data from another domain.

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [134] I've asked this question earlier to some other MVPs. I want to register a script (javascript) across all the pages in a specific scope - Site/ Site Collection/ Web Application. I learnt that it can be done by adding it to the 'Pagehead' delegate control. But i cant assume that the target web application's (custom) master pages will have the control in them. So what are the other ways i can register a script across the board?

A: Use the new CustomAction ScriptLink location

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

A: Check the new <CustomAction> attribute ScriptSrc where you can use a Feature to deploy a script reference to every page in a Site/Site Collection/Web App/Farm based on the Feature scope.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [135] my data connection file contains authentication info. I hope my form works after enabling cross domain but do i need to do something for authentication in the connection file?

A: Just make sure, you have allowed form template to use authentication information contained in the data connection file. Go to central admin > general application settings > configure InfoPath forms services. In the section "Authentication to data sources (user form templates)", check "Allow user form templates to use authentication information contained in data connection files" checkbox. Save your settings and your form should work fine now.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [136] @Shane Young: Cheers Shane - the new SSP test seems like the best plan. There are multiple Content DBs, ones created before the SP2 roll-out, ones created after. And the issue is replicated in 3 farms so the common denominator is...SP2 I think

A: Good luck

Randy Drisgill MVP (Expert):

Q: [137] I found that SharePoint cuts <object> tag from content of news or blog entries. So how I can add video from YouTube or other video hosting to my blog-site for example?

A: I think you would have to use JavaScript to pull this off, since the Object tag presents problems these days. Perhaps a content editor web part with JavaScript in it would work for you. See the following post, it might help: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537508.aspx.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [138] Thank you so much @Saifullah. I am so happy that my form will work now as intended. I had set a goal to finish this form by the end of this week. I think I will be able to finish it before the deadline. Thank you thank you thank you

A: I am glad I was able to help.

Melissa Travers MSFT (Moderator): We have about 15 minutes left for today’s chat. If you still have questions for our Experts, please get them in as soon as possible. They will try to answer as many as possible in the time remaining. Thanks!

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [139] Re: Q:127. Thanks John.

A: Happy to help!

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [140] follow up on Q [132], the whole purpose to create ECT is to reuse the associated workflow across site collections, any insights to achieve that?

A: You are correct, however the resources that the enterprise content type (don't call it ECT because that is used for external content types... BCS stuff) leverages are not deployed. Consider the following reason: the Managed Metadata service is federated across two farms. If a enterpriseCT contains a reference to doc templates & event receivers or workflows deployed with a WSP, the product team decided (correctly) that the code shouldn't be deployed to the target farm which would be considered a security hole open to exploit.

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [141] Are the Beta exams on SP 2010 available? Anyone tried them?

A: I believe the Beta slots are all taken up right now.

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

Q: [142] @Todd - Sorry. Does the 'new' means that it is only with SP 2010 and not MOSS 2007? (sorry, posting it with 'ask the experts' check)

A: Yes, the CustomAction ScriptLink location is new to SharePoint 2010.

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [143] I lost the search admin links in SSP. Been trying to get them back but not successful. Any idea? Thanks.

A: Can you clarify? When you say you lost them do you mean that the link in the left navigation in Central Admin isn't there anymore?

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [144] When I try to connect InfoPath 2010 to SharePoint, I get an error. I don't remember the exact message but it something like "cannot connect to SharePoint". I have checked everything. I couldn't find anything wrong. Enterprise features are enabled.

A: I answered this question in the last SharePoint chat (April). If you have checked all settings and you are sure everything is fine then most probably the reason is that you have not created top level site collection.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [145] On the search thing - in case it sounds too crazy to be true I have details here http://www.sharepointoverflow.com/questions/1744/publishing-sites-search-and-the-missing-contentclasssts-site-sts-web. Will test a new SSP as suggested by Shane

A: I believe you. I have seen oddball things before. Good luck.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [146] @Andrew - Is it available with MOSS 2007 or is it bound to SP 2010?

A: Not sure what "it" is... please elaborate.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [147] Where is content query web part in SharePoint 2010?

A: Have you enabled "Search Server Web Parts" feature in site collection features? After you have enabled the said feature, content query web part will show up in "content rollup" category.

Todd Klindt (Expert):

Q: [148] Todd - Have you seen any issues where a farm admin would not see all the options in Central Administration? (Sorry, this is SP2010)

A: I can happen if the Central Admin URL is just typed into a browser on the server, as opposed to starting it from the link in Start, which really fires up psconfig.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [149] We have a SharePoint 2007 content database that far exceeds the 100GB size recommendation. I'd like to reduce the size of this database without deleting or archiving some of the existing content and I'd like this change to be seamless to the end users. I've considered exporting some of the data at a particular point in the site tree, creating a new site collection with a new database, and importing the data back ... but that seems like a lot of work. Are there any other techniques or third party tools available that I should consider to reduce the size of this very large content database?

A: Is the whole database one site collection?

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [150] Q141 - @Muhanad @Mike - Any experiences on Beta exams?

A: Not yet - I'm scheduled to take mine next Monday

Muhanad Omar (Expert):

Q: [151] Hi All, We're considering a large SharePoint deployment that will be multi-lingual. Can someone explain how the new "Chrome" interface in SharePoint 2010 works for the users? I heard that users will be able to choose their own language (assuming we've installed the language pack). Can alerts be sent in the user's chosen language?

A: SharePoint 2010 now supports MUI (multilingual user interface). For a user to choose his/her preferred language, the language pack for that language needs to be installed on all WFE's and must be selected as an available language through the Site Collection Settings > Language Settings. Not sure about alerts being sent in the preferred language though.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [152] I am trying to create a blog site using powershell. Does anyone know what is the template id for blog site?

A: It's BLOG#0.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [153] Does anyone know how to register a specific powershell snapin?

A: In Windows, run powershell (type powershell at command prompt) and then type add-pssnapin and hit enter. It will ask for name (parameter). Enter name and hit enter.

Melissa Travers MSFT (Moderator): We have about 7 minutes left in this morning's chat. If you have any last minute questions, please submit them asap. The Experts will answer as many questions as they can in the time remaining. Thanks!

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [154] @Andrew - Sorry Andrew. It means 'new <CustomAction> attribute Scriptsrc'.

A: That's available ONLY in SharePoint 2010.

Gary Lapointe MVP (Expert):

Q: [155] Can we expect any service or store for SharePoint webparts like Windows Phone Marketplace for WP7 or AppStore?

A: Possibly. If you go to the Solutions tab in the solution gallery you'll see a link to browse office.com. We believe that this will be some sort of "app store" but the page currently errors and there is no details available as to what will be here.

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

A: Navigate to the Solution Gallery in any SharePoint 2010 Site Collection and click on the Browse Office.com button. Right now it results in an error page, but here's hoping.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [156] Regarding Q149, the entire database is one site collection and is currently 300GB in size and growing rapidly.

A: Bonnie - I have been part of one of these projects before. Took months to do. You really do just have to dig in and use export. You might consider the third party tool from Metalogix to make that easier. But it is painful. I am sure you are already seeing locking problems?

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [157] I think this question is similar to Q: 117, but thought I'd ask anyway. In MOSS Ent we have a field (e.g. named "Key Field"); that we need to include across multiple site collections. It needs to be shared across multiple libraries and is unique per library. We want to be able to use it to query from either through CQWP or Search. Is there something we could do with jQuery to "trick" SP into using the same fieldID or do we need to do this programmatically.

A: Programatic... you can't trick it from the client.

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [158] @john ross: the two search admin links are not there. I search for sols on internet and tried to copy the two folder s2search, s2admin from a dev farm to it and tried to activate the features but it didn't work. Thanks.

A: If you look in your list of site collection is the Web application still there where you SSP exists?

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

A: This might be helpful: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/blogs/fromthefield/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=0ce77946%2D1e45%2D4b43%2D8c74%2D21963e64d4e1&ID=80&Web=5170eb8a%2D912d%2D4024%2D814a%2D81e94b9d34ce

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [159] thanks @saifullah How can I add AD snapin?

A: add-pssnapin Microsoft.Windows.AD

Todd Klindt (Expert):

Q: [160] @Tood Klindt - Language Pack warnings - I am seeing a lot of: Information messages saying "Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 1046 language Pack Core." Followed Immediately by a warning with source MsiInstaller "Failed to connect to Server. Error 0x80070005"

A: Hey, I recognize you. Sounds more like an MSI problem than a SharePoint problem. I'd dig into it from that aspect. I don't have any answer off the top of my head.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [162] Where can I find all sharepoint powershell commands?

A: Use following PS command: Get-Command -pssnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell. It will return 650+ commands.

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [164] @john ross: yes the SSP still exists. Search DB is there. The only missing thing are the search admin link

A: You should be able to find the URL of the site collection in your list of site collections. Have you tried that yet?

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [165] thanks @saifullah. You are a great help. What does powershell command get-spfeature do?

A: You are welcome. It gets the features that are installed or enabled at a specific scope. Use a specific scope (farm, site, Web) to see only those enabled.

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [166] John Ross : Thanks for the response John! I am using the Content Type Hubs feature to publish and share the Content Type. Hence ideally any changes made to it and later published should be inherited by all the parties subscribing to the Hub. Right??Then why is the case different with the Workflow attached to the Content Type? Should we really call the workflow as truly 'Reusable' in that case? I had a customer having a SPD 2007 Workflow which was utilized across various Site Collections but then he had to maintain so many workflow copies. Any change to the workflow means to update that many workflow copies and redeploy them. Is there any efficient way other than re-writing the workflow in Visual Studio to help resolve his problem?

A: The Reusable workflows are definitely reusable -- far more reusable than the previous iteration of SPD Workflows from SPD 2007. However, the Site Collection is a boundary and the way the workflows work they can't be reused automatically across site collections. I specifically haven't tried it but if that's what you are seeing then I would assume that is expected behavior. You can always import SPD 2010 workflows into Visual Studio 2010 to extend further.

Melissa Travers MSFT (Moderator):

Q: [167] How are the monthly chat sessions scheduled? Last week of the month? Thanks.

A: We do not have a regular schedule yet, but are averaging 2 per month to hit multiple time zones. The Chat schedules are posted here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/chats/default.aspx

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [168] @saifullah I have a different question now. I am creating a new sp server. I know my machine is 64-bit but when i try to install SharePoint 2010 it says virtualization is not enabled. Why?

A: You mean you are trying to install virtual machine and you get an error. VT (Virtualization Technology) is not enabled by default. You have to enable it in BIOS. Don't forget to powercycle the system after saving changes in BIOS.

Shane Young MVP (Expert):

Q: [169] Have you seen any issues where a farm admin would not see all the options in Central Administration in SP2010?

A: If they are not a local administrator on the SharePoint box then they will not see things like create web application. Is that what you are seeing?

Gary Lapointe MVP (Expert):

Q: [170] Are there any ideas to run SharePoint 2010 on Azure?

A: There are plans for a version of SharePoint called "SharePoint Services" which will be part of the Azure stack but at present there's been absolutely no information made available about what exactly it is or if it's still on the roadmap or not.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [172] what is powercycling? @saifullah

A: By simply rebooting the system, VT changes made in the BIOS will not take effect. You have to turn the system off and then on again for the changes to take effect. This is called as power cycling.

Melissa Travers MSFT (Moderator): Due to the large volume of questions submitted, the experts may not have had time to answer all of the questions. We apologize if you submitted a question in today’s chat that did not get answered. We will try and answer a few more in the time left

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [173] Where can I download complete sp 2010 installation article. Just curious!

A: There are many articles and guides available on the net. Even I have written one that can be downloaded from the following site: http://sharepoint2007tips.com. It is called "Installing and configuring SharePoint 2010".

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

A: One way that I like to deviate from the installation instructions for a SharePoint 2010 developer VM is to cancel out of the configuration wizard just before answering the StandAlone vs. Farm then run the PowerShell cmdlet New-SPConfigurationDatabase before continuing with the wizard.

Andrew Connell - MVP (Expert):

Q: [174] What is the most striking difference between MOSS 2007 and SP 2010?

A: The numbers 2007 & 2010

Q: [175] I am so happy i joined this chat today. How can I learn SharePoint 2010 development? has Microsoft released hands on lab for SharePoint just like it did for .net?

A: You can download Hands-on Labs for SharePoint 2010 from the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=c010fc68-b47f-4db6-b8a8-ad4ba33a35c5

Q: [176] @Andrew Connel - Any idea of SharePoint variations in SP 2010. How to use them? I am facing lot og trouble while using it. Most of the targeted sites are not opening properly.

A: It works OOTB and redirection works when you browse to a site using the same locale as your browser is set to.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [177] @saifullah last question! where to configure InfoPath forms services in SharePoint 2010?

Q: [180][Follow up of Q174] hahaha @Andrew... also he missing internal version 13

A: True... in addition, it's pretty significant that Site Actions went from the right to the left side of the page.

Gary Lapointe MVP (Expert):

Q: [181] the health analyst always complain that the farm account is used for SPUserCodeV4 service, is it not supposed to be?

A: You can change this to use a different account. You can do this in central admin or via powershell. It's not recommended that it use the farm account (you should create a new account).

John Ross - MVP (Expert):

Q: [182] So... I am trying to hunt for a person who has installed SP2010 in the least amount of RAM so far (for evaluation purpose). What is the least RAM I can run SP2010 for eval? Although Official HW SW Requirement says 4GB is minimum, but in the TechNet Forums, I am hearing some guys have done it with 2GB... Is there anyone who installed it with below 2GB RAM?

A: I've heard of people accidentally installing SP2010 on VMs without much RAM. But I would strongly recommend against less than 2GB. Ideally I'd say 4GB if you can spare it.

Todd Bleeker (Expert):

A: I run SharePoint Foundation 2010 in 2GB all the time.

Gary Lapointe MVP (Expert):

Q: [185] follow-up on Q [181 ]: my real question is, when I create this service, there is not any option?

A: Correct - you don't have the option when you create the service - you have to do it after the fact. There are several services that suffer this same limitation.
