Bryan Phillips (Expert): Hi, I'm Bryan Phillips. I am a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in Windows SharePoint Services and co-author of the best-selling book Professional Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007.

Start of chat:

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [1] Hello, I'm having an issue with powerpoint. Every word in my presentation that is underlined causes a large solid box to be printed across the slide. The box can't be seen while editing the powerpoint, only in print preview and when printing. Removing the underline removes these boxes, every underlined word causes it and it is only in one presentation (other powerpoint files are unaffected.) the boxes cover significant amounts of the slides. Have you come across this is there a fix?

A: While this is a SharePoint themed chat, please allow me to try. It's possible that you are using a different font on the offending slide deck. Verify the font is the same as the others. You may want to try a different font.

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [2] Would you please give some details of SP 2010 Licensing?

A: You can start by having a look on the Microsoft SharePoint site
http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/Pages/Licensing-Details.aspx
http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/Pages/default.aspx

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [2] Would you please give some details of SP 2010 Licensing?

A: SharePoint Foundation Server 2010 is free. It has replaced WSS 3.0 which was a free add-on for Windows Server. You need a license for Windows Server though. Different vendors have different prices. In the US market, SP 2010 standard user CAL is approx. $95. SP enterprise CAL 2010 single OPEN 1 license device CAL is $95 (5 servers = $415). SP server 2010 Single OPEN 1 license: $4926. Here is the official MS page: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/Pages/Licensing-Details.aspx

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [3] I have created a new site collection using the blank template. I cannot figure out how to enable enterprise keywords on a library in the root site. I have turned on metadata navigation feature and enterprise site features. I have also checked the metadata service app is connected to my web app.

A: You only have access in the Document Information Panel to properties on the document. You can, however, push the properties from the Document Set to the document.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [3] I have created a new site collection using the blank template. I cannot figure out how to enable enterprise keywords on a library in the root site. I have turned on metadata navigation feature and enterprise site features. I have also checked the metadata service app is connected to my web app.

A: You need to add a new column of type managed metadata in the library. The existing enterprise keywords column is of type managed metadata but it is filtered out when you turn on metadata navigation. Create a new managed metadata column and pick a Term store to use it with. Then it will show up in the metadata navigation.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [4] Hi Should I be able to access metadata from the "document set" in the DIP of a document inside the set? I want to use the data in quick parts.

A: You only have access in the Document Information Panel to properties on the document. You can, however, push the properties from the Document Set to the document.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [5] To produce/develop custom web parts for a site. Is c# the language that dominates that portion of SharePoint development?

A: Most of the examples you'll find are C#, though there are many sites (including Microsoft) that will show both VB and C# samples. Chose the one that makes sense for you, but be ready to have to translate from C#.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [6] And what is the cost of SP 2010 for Internet Sites?

A: Have you seen following page? It allows you to calculate estimate retail price of licenses: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/mla/product.aspx. As I said in my previous answer, price is based on different factors like the environment (school, company, home) and number of computers you will use to install SP on, etc.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [7] Q4 follow up thanks. Is there a difference between pushing and sharing the metadata? Looking at the Document set setting it says shared columns.

A: Just my language. Shared columns. They have to end up in the document itself for it to be visible in DIP.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [8] can reusable workflow be associated with Enterprise Content type so it can be reused across site collection?

A: I've not seen any restrictions on attaching workflows to enterprise content types. Obviously, you'll need to make sure that the workflow exists in the target sites.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [9] Thanks Rob and Paul - but I am wanting enterprise keywords, rather than managed metadata from a managed term store (am I making sense?). In a site using say a team site template, there is an option under library settings that says "Enterprise Metadata and Keywords Settings" - this is not available in my blank site.

A: Neither Paul or I are understanding the question

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [10] Hello! Can I ask some technical question about SPS2010? why SPS2010 still puts the logs in text files in plain text? It is very difficult to find anything in this logs. Whats a best way to search in logs you can offer?

A: Mikhail, the ULS logs are still text. There is a viewer that can help you detect issues in your logs or you can use LogViewer to process the logs into SQL. If you are talking about the usage logs, they are processed into the WSS_Usage logs based on settings when you add the application.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [11] How much is SP 2010 standard user cal?

A: Different vendors have different prices. In the US market, SP 2010 standard user CAL is approx. $95.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [12] Can we expect to get an updated set of the "Fantastic 40" for SP2010 and do the current ones (including the Groupboard) work with MSS/Foundation 2010 ?

A: There are plans to update the Fantastic 40 for SharePoint 2010, but there are no specific dates given at this point. The existing 2007 Fantastic 40 site templates can't be imported into 2010 and the WSPs won't work correctly if loaded. You'll need to wait for the updated versions to be released.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [13] What is the cost of SharePoint foundation server?

A: SharePoint Foundation Server 2010 is free. It has replaced WSS 3.0 which was a free add-on for Windows Server. You need a license for Windows Server though.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [13] What is the cost of SharePoint foundation server?

A: SharePoint Foundation is FREE! All you need is a regular Windows Server license and appropriate Client Access licenses.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [14] Do we have Feature Stapling supported in SharePoint 2010?

A: Yes.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [15] An update for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) had caught my attention, but, every time I try to download the update it doesn't. Need help?

A: Doesn't help what problem? (Please ask a follow up question)

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [16] In 2010 can I make a personal view on a list or library defaulted for the individual user? eg user1 sees View1 user2 see view2 anyone who doesn't have a personal view sees view3.

A: You can't out of the box.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [17] When planning SP 2010 physical topology for medium size farm, what is the primary reason for allocating separate physical Application server? How easy will it be to scale out later? (we are planning to have 200-300 in the first deployment stage and >1000 later)

A: The application server is typically used to run search which is an intensive process. In SharePoint 2010 it can run other services as well (like Excel, Access, etc.)

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [18] Why should I use a docset when saving docs.

A: Document sets are a way to treat a group of documents as a single entity as such. So if it makes sense to group documents together (for example if you have a pack of documents like a word document, a powerpoint file and and excel file that are all created together and should be kept together) then a document set will do this for you. Otherwise you can save documents as individual documents within libraries without document sets.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [19] I am customizing(branding) Search control for MOSS, what are the steps I need to follow? Only overriding createchildcontrol() is enough?

A: It all depends on what you are trying to do. First, which search control? If you are creating a new search box, overriding CCC is where you should start. Can you provide some detail as to what you are doing?

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [19] I am customizing(branding) Search control for MOSS, what are the steps I need to follow? Only overriding createchildcontrol() is enough?

A: I think the best approach would be to create and deploy a Delegate Control that overrides the out of the box web part. There are many examples out there.

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [20] why anonymous users can not invoke sharepoint web services even if the whole sharepoint site is anonymous?

A: I'm assuming you are talking about SharePoint 2010 here - The web services have some configuration around anonymous access. For example if you have a look at the client object model (which I would suggest is worth looking at for consuming SharePoint data from a client) you need to specifically enable the web services for anonymous access, even if the anonymous users have permission to the lists/sites. There is a good blog post at http://blog.mastykarz.nl/inconvenient-silverlight-object-model-anonymous-users/ that describes this one in regards to the service that silverlight web services.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [21] We are a small company of 200 employees. What will be the SP2010 price? can we calculate it somewhere?

A: There is no definite answer. If yours is a small company, you may need a MS Open License Program. Contact MS or an authorized reseller for more details. I can give you some estimates but let me remind you price depends on your organization's infrastructure (for example, number of servers, no of desktop computers, etc) and because I don’t have that information I cannot give you exact price but rough estimates are as following (assuming you have 5 servers and 250-300 desktop computers): standard CAL 2010 single OPEN 1 license device is $95. SP enterprise CAL 2010 single OPEN 1 license device CAL is $95 (5 servers = $415). SP server 2010 Single OPEN 1 license: $4926. The following page allows you to calculate estimate retail price of licenses: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/mla/product.aspx

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [22] So how come the new constraints dont work with muli-value lookup fields - isnt that a big gap??

A: Multi-value lookup fields are backed by ntext columns in the database and therefore cannot use the same functionality such as filtering, constraints, or sorting that regular fields can.

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [23] I'm having a problem the user profile import to work. The service starts, but I get an unexpected error when I click on the user profile service application.

A: What version of 2010 are you using?

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [24] Can i create a custom component to use with the content organizer that will folder documents based on say the first 5 chars of the title?

A: Probably the easiest way to do this would be by creating an event handler to do the filing in folders after the content organizer moves the document to the correct library.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [25] Why is it a separate SKU for Fast Search server in SP 2010? What is it? What is it for?

A: SharePoint out of the box provides Search. FAST for SharePoint 2010 provides additional features over and above the OOB SharePoint Search experience. It is a separate product for SharePoint. It is licensed separately. On the front end it provides a better end user search experience. On the backend there are many features that support enterprise search applications and extensibility not offered by SharePoint Search.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [26] Automatic updates is saying I need to download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition , but, it doesn't download when the automatic update starts running. Why and is there a website to download it from?

A: Automatic updates only suggests downloads for existing installed products. You can download SQL Server 2008 R2 Express from http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/R2Downloads.aspx

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [27] [Q23 follow up.] version 14.0.4763.1000

A: Is your Forefront Identity Manager service running?
There is an online lab that you can have a look at. It explains how to configure the profile import:
https://cmg.vlabcenter.com/default.aspx?moduleid=0d46e291-b799-48ce-9df9-b15f9ca2b893

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [28] Can I run SharePoint 2010 on a client machine? Is there anything that is not supported on the client machine?

A: SharePoint 2010 will run on Windows 7 and Windows Vista (with Service Pack 2). The limitation is that you can only run it as a "stand alone" installation (so you can't connect to a farm and you are essentially locked in to using the local SQL server installation). Functionality wise you are not limited in doing stuff but it is really only designed for development and evaluation purposes

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [29] Is there a process from upgrading infpath2007 forms (with code behind and rules) to 2010? Or is it best to recreate them from scratch in 2010?

A: There's no one upgrade path, however, I'd start by trying to work with the 2007 form. However, I should say as a general rule I discourage the use of code in InfoPath forms for deployment reasons

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [29] Is there a process from upgrading infpath2007 forms (with code behind and rules) to 2010? Or is it best to recreate them from scratch in 2010?

A: I know what exactly you are looking for. There is no such guide or detailed article available at the moment (AFAIK) but I am sure you will very soon see articles regarding this issue. There is one article published by the InfoPath team. Check it out! It's not very comprehensive but might prove to be a good starting point. URL: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/infopath/archive/2010/04/08/upgrading-infopath-2007-forms-with-person-group-pickers-to-infopath-2010.aspx

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [30] What operating system do i need to install SharePoint server 2010?

A: You need 64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [31] i have developed a treeview webpart which pulls documents from document library depending on the subsite we selected, it works perfectly fine on test server, when i moved it to production server.it works fine for 4 subsites out of 7 for three subsites it throws error. Server Error in '/' Application.

A: What is the rest of the error message?

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [31] i have developed a treeview webpart which pulls documents from document library depending on the subsite we selected, it works perfectly fine on test server, when i moved it to production server.it works fine for 4 subsites out of 7 for three subsites it throws error. Server Error in '/' Application.

A: Is the document library named the same if all subsites? Did you hard code the name of the list in your code?

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [32] Hi again, I've been reading here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee559337%28office.14%29.aspx which talks about managed terms vs enterprise keywords. I would like to add the enterprise keyword column to my content type however I cannot see how to do this for a library in the site I've created from the blank site template. After reading here (http://chrislcap.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2B396B3160473E4C!1670.entry) it says to configure this using the "enterprise metadata and keyword settings" link under library settings > Permissions and management. I do not have this option available for the library in question.

A: I just created a blank site in 2010 and then created a document library underneath it. The Enterprise Metadata and Keywords Settings link is there in Library settings. Are you sure that you've configured a Managed Metadata service app in Central administration and that your site is subscribed to that service app. Enterprise keywords are dependent on the managed metadata service.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [33] So for constraints and multi-value lookups then MMD is a better option? Can the MMD terms stores be accessed via a web service etc so we can query values out with something like the DataViewWebPart then?

A: MMD is a better answer than multi-value lookups. multi-value lookups are stacked that that's not supported in many places. MMD has had a great deal of effort put into support. The web service specification is at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd962601(office.12).aspx

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [34] a follow up on anonymous access to web service: thanks for the blog link. it helps. What is the stroy for moss, anonymous user can't access to lists.asmx

A: SharePoint 2010 will run on Windows 7 and Windows Vista (with Service Pack 2). The limitation is that you can only run it as a "stand alone" installation (so you can't connect to a farm and you are essentially locked in to using the local SQL server installation). Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [34] a follow up on anonymous access to web service: thanks for the blog link. it helps. What is the stroy for moss, anonymous user can't access to lists.asmx

A: For MOSS the OOTB web services can't be accessed anonymously - if you need to have anonymous web services for MOSS you will need to write custom web services that do the appropriate things to return the data for you.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [35] object reference is not set to an instance of object

A: This is a very common error. Did I miss the first part of this question? Could you please provide more information? Do you get this error in SharePoint or InfoPath?

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [36][Q27 follow up] Yes, the service is running. I've resorted to using the farm account for the service application to troubleshoot. Still no luck.

A: Did you try an IISRESET after starting your service?

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [36] [Q27 follow up] Yes, the service is running. I've resorted to using the farm account for the service application to troubleshoot. Still no luck.

A: Do you have any errors in the event viewer?

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [37] [Q31 follow up] yeah,

A: Double-check the internal name of the list in the problem subsites. They might be different than the other subsites though their display names appear to be the same.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [38] Is there documentation that explain when to use the different data access types. For example, when should I use Linq or when should I use CAML or the server OM?

A: The short is use LINQ when you can. Ultimately look at our patterns and practices SharePoint Guidance work (www.microsoft.com/spg and www.codeplex.com/spg) LINQ won't work for anonymous and for external lists. CAML is what LINQ is translated to. ServerOM and ClientOM both use CAML.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [39] basically i have created views in documentry libraru for each subsite,

A: see Q46

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [40] What about disposing in SharePoint 2010 object model? Rules are same as in WSS 3.0?

A: Yep - you can still use SPDisposeCheck as well to help identify potential leaks the same as you do with MOSS as well. This helps ensure backwards compatibility with code written for MOSS by not changing the server side API.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [41] and its built on wss3.0

A: See Q 46

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [42] Is there any way to use Master pages for MOSS in SP 2010 environment?

A: Yes you can. You can look at doing a visual upgrade to get SP2010 running under the hood, but keep your UI looking like MOSS. There are also controls that you can put into your MasterPage that identify what parts of a master page should be rendered based on what version of the UI is being loaded (either 3 or 4) - you can have a look at these in the default.master and v4.master that are provisioned in the site by default) and then you can set the UI version to 3 or 4 to display appropriate controls in the master page.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [43] [Q37 follow up] how to check the internal name ?

A: Download SharePoint Manager from CodePlex: http://spm.codeplex.com. When you run it on the server, it will give you a visual representation of the object model which you can use to check the doc libs' internal names.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [44] I have a custom web service which start with "new spsite("url"); , and it fails for anonymous users, what is the catch?

A: This article has the solution: http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/sharepoint-blog/creating-a-custom-web-service-for-sharepoint-13553

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [45] What are software pre-requisites for installing SP 2010?

A: You will find these details in the "SharePoint installation and configuration" guide that can be downloaded free from following site: http://sharepoint2007tips.com.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [46] its working fine before , all i did was some code changes and deployed it again and it works fine on test server?

A: If you rollback to your previous code, does it still work?

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [48] if i replace the dll with older version it works

A: What changes did you make that caused the web part not to work?

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [49] Hi Paul, yes I've configured the service app. To clarify further, I've created a site collection using the blank template and I'm having these issues in the root site of this site collection.

A: Did you check to make sure that the site collection is subscribed to the managed metadata service? I checked on a blank site collection that I created and the setting is there for me.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [51] When can we expect integration of Team Foundation Server 2010 and Project 2010/ SP 2010?

A: Project Server 2010 is available now. TFS 2010 uses 2007. There are no stated plans about the migration. (I've not heard.)

Brian Farnhill (Expert):

Q: [53] Any decent TechNet documentation out there for transitioning one SharePoint 2007 or 2010 Farm from forest A to forest B without any trusts in place? Just curious, something that's popped a couple of times. I know about good ole migrateuser stsadm command, more just wondering if there's anything else out there that might helpful. Thanks!

A: I don't know that there is anything too well documented outside of the using stsadm migrateuser command that I've seen on TechNet. If you are interested there are some posts on my blog under the Active Directory tag (http://blog.brianfarnhill.com/tag/active-directory/) where I talk about some experiences i had migrating a farm to a new forest.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [54] I have been hearing a lot about sandboxed solutions lately. What exactly is sandboxed solution and how can we deploy it on our server?

A: Sandboxed solutions is a new feature in SP 2010. It enables site collection admins to manage applications in site collection. It provides developers a way to create solutions that can be deployed safely. Sandboxed solution will run with partial trust when deployed at the site collection level.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [55] When I try to create a User Profile Service Application synchronization connection, I get an error "Access to requested resource(s ) is denied." The log shows "originalMaConfiguration.Create or UpdateResource failed at step Create Connection" is this a database permissions issue? what permissions are required for the user profile import account?

A: Did you provide the Service Account "Create all child objects" permissions in Active Directory? http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=47854

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [55] When I try to create a User Profile Service Application synchronization connection, I get an error "Access to requested resource(s ) is denied." The log shows "originalMaConfiguration.Create or UpdateResource failed at step Create Connection" is this a database permissions issue? what permissions are required for the user profile import account?

A: You can also have a look a this documentation: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee721049.aspx

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [57] what is the recommendation on using lambda expression?

A: In what context? There's no reason not to use them.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [58] Where can I get more info about sandbox solutions?

A: MSDN mag recently published a very fine article about sandboxed solutions. Here is the link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee335711.aspx. It explains how sandboxed solutions can be developed, deployed and monitored.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [59] [Q48 follow up] Bryan Phillips?

A: What code changes did you make?

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [60] Is any plans to some tool for installing pre-requisites software for SPS2010 on client OS as Windows 7 more easily?

A: There are no current stated plans to produce a Windows 7 prerequisite installer.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [61] I am playing around with listviews in 2010. I don't find SPD that helpful. do you use it as an xslt editor? or do you just do it from scratch?

A: When you say list views you mean XSLTDataViews, right?? Yep, we use SPD as an XSLT editor, and for creating External Content Types and other site work. One thing I like to teach folks is to store XSLT in a file and reference it from your web part.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [62] [Q59 follow up] i changed code to sort the documents based on docorder column which is type number-bryan phillips

A: Double-check that the column is present in each of the doc libs in the subsitse

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [63] Can SharePoint libraries scale to hold thousands of docs? Do I have store the docs in SQL?

A: With SharePoint 2010, you can store up to 50 million documents in a document library but the recommended limit is 4-5 million.

Q: [63] Can SharePoint libraries scale to hold thousands of docs? Do I have store the docs in SQL?

A: Yes, SharePoint libraries can hold thousands of documents. Depends on the size of the documents! SharePoint stores the documents in SQL. You can store 2 million documents in the library by nesting folders. The document size should not exceed 50 MB as a rule of thumb. The file save performance degrades as the file size grows.

Matt McDermott MVP (Expert):

Q: [64] Is there any way to easily change the order of tabs in the search center templates? So far I had to remove them and add them in the correct order to accomplish that.

A: Yes, in 2007 and 2010 there is a list on the site called "Tabs in Search Pages". Open the list and choose "Change Order" from the menu. I just looked it up in 2007 and I would bet it's the same in 2010.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [65] does lambda expression address different issue than what CAML address? what is different between those 2 in term of where and how they should be used?

A: Expressions are converted to CAML. The core data engine for SharePoint is CAML.

Q: [66] Does an overview exist on which lists switching from dialogs to full screen forms works? I have switched it off on an Events list but it still comes up with an inline dialog and not a full screen input form

A: There is no override that I'm aware of. I'd close and reopen the browser.

Melissa Travers MSFT (Moderator):

Q: [67] Melissa-how could i paste a link here?

A: Copy paste should work for this.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [70] in moss size of a site collection is recommended as 10G, what is the recommendation in SharePoint 2010?

A: In MOSS the recommended size is 100GB per content database. It depends on how many site collections per content database and how collaborative they are. If the sites are still very collaborative (interactive) then you should still limit content databases to between 100 -200 GB in SharePoint 2010. If you get bigger than that you can have locking contention issues in the database that will affect performance. In a more traditional WCM site that is mostly read only your site collection content database can get as big as you can back up and restore in a meaningful time.

Paul Stork (Expert):

Q: [71] I have sorted my issue - after reading here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepoint2010setup/thread/2de08757-a1df-44a4-bcbd-d1d9a5e4077f I activated the feature with ID 73EF14B1-13A9-416b-A9B5-ECECA2B0604C (appears to be a hidden feature?) and now I have the Enterprise Metadata and Keywords Settings option under library settings.

A: That's a site collection feature that is evidently activated by some other feature as a dependency. I'm not sure which feature it depends on but I would suspect Publishing Infrastructure.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [72] I was using VS 2010 to create a web part. When I hit F5 it starts to deploy but VS complains that the web.config file is bad. The web.config file is not bad, it is well formed. If I deploy the solution via PowerShell it deploys fine. Any idea what to look for?

A: I seen this when the URL I'm using isn't the default alternate access mapping for the web application. i.e. I'm putting http://localhost into VS2010 and the default url is http://mybox

Q: [73] What is BCS in sp 2010?

A: BCS stands for Business Connectivity Services. It allows you to connect to external data sources. You can read data from external data sources as well as write back to them. In Business Data Catalog in MOSS 2007, you needed a custom solution to write to the external data source. Using BCS in SP 2010 is fairly easy.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [73] What is BCS in sp 2010?

A: BCS is Business Connectivity Services which gives you read/write access to your databases and backend systems through SharePoint. Essentially, you can make a SQL table look and act like a list in SharePoint.

Q: [74] @Rob Q66: I am just trying inside a VM. I switched from dialog to standard on an Announcements list just fine. The same fails on a Calendar, no matter if I close IE 8 or not. Any ideas?

A: I'm seeing the same behavior. Must be a bug ... or a "by design"

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [75] Tell me a good link or article for BCS?

A: The following link has all the detail that you will need to learn the basics about BCS: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee819133.aspx

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [76] What is external content type? I know we had content types in MOSS but what does external content type mean?

A: Content type is a reusable schema for lists. External content type is a content type that has data access capabilities. It provides mapping between SharePoint and external systems and describes both the entities and behaviors of the data source. (Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee819133.aspx)

Q: [78] in 2010 if I change the name of a wiki page the title the page seems to retain the old name. Have I missed something?

A: A wiki page has both a filename (eg "My Page.aspx"”) and a title property (which is what sets the heading on the page). The two aren't directly linked so if you want to change them both you need to set the specific values on each one. You can change the file name by going to the wiki library and selecting the edit properties of the page you want to edit (you can also set the title here as well instead of doing it directly on the page itself)

Q: [79] I was just set up as farm admin on a SP2010 farm. I am local admin as well, not domain admin. I try to use the Management Shell and it does not load the SP cmdlets. Any ideas? I can work with central admin without an issue.

A: Are you right clicking on the Management Shell and selecting Run as Administrator when you start it up? If you don't Run as Administrator the UAC will keep the shell from seeing the SP cmdlets correctly. You also need to be specifically added to the SP cmdlets permissions by someone who has SharePoint Powershell permissions. Take a look at this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee806878.aspx

Q: [82] My question is regarding InfoPath 2010. If i create a form that is not browser enabled and I deploy it to the server that supports browser enabled forms, what will happen?

A: If your form is not browser-enabled and you deploy it, all browser-compatible features of the form template will be unavailable. They will be disabled.

Serge Tremblay (Expert):

Q: [83] What's the difference of running Foundation with it's built-in DB vs. using SQL 2008 R2 beside of the management GUI?

A: You are limited to 4 Gb of data with the built in db.

Rob Bogue [MVP] (Expert):

Q: [84] How NLB works for SharePoint? say, two or three WFE servers running on NLB, if user hits a URL, where the request first lands?

A: NLB is a separate topic. How you load balance the front ends is outside of the scope of SharePoint's behavior. If you're using NLB you can refer to the regular NLB configuration documentation.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [85] Question is about InfoPath 2010. I know we can enable/disable web enabled forms but what is enable/disable rendering of forms?

A: I assume you are asking about the enabling/disabling rendering of browser-enabled user form templates. Yes, you can enable/disable publishing of browser-enabled user form templates but you can also enable/disable rendering of browser-enabled user form templates across the entire server farm to reduce server load. Remember, by default, browser rendering of user form templates is enabled. You have to disable this feature manually if you want to reduce server load on your farm.

Bryan Phillips (Expert):

Q: [86] If I create a silverlight application and deploy it to SP where should I deploy the XAP?

A: The best place is a subfolder under the _layouts folder.

Saifullah Shafiq MVP (Expert):

Q: [87] InfoPath 2010: my form has a data connection that accesses data from a list that is in another site collection. I get an error. I am sure there is setting to resolve this. I assumed this feature would be available out of the box.

A: Yes. By default, cross-domain access is disabled. You can enable it for the entire server farm. By enabling it, your data connection will be able to access list outside of current site collection.
